River patterns in landscapes. 1999. In Maudsly, M. & Marshall, J. (Eds) Heterogeneity in Landscape Ecology Pattern and Scale, pp. 16975. International Association for Landscape Ecology (UK Region).
River patterns, at a level between that of the hydrologist and that of the river biologist, have escaped study. this paper introduces concepts to describe and evaluate these, using both natural and man-made attributes. The river course is divided into (reasonably uniform) segments, each then described by its sizes, banks, flood plains, vegetation, artefacts, etc.
