Socioeconomic forces in Gozo (Maltese Islands) and landscape ecology analysis. 2000. In: T. Clare & D. Howard (Eds), Quantitative approaches to landscape ecology, pp. 2532. International Association for Landscape Ecology (UK Region). IALE (UK).
Gozo is the still-rural sister island of Malta, but there are many pressures for development, which is proceeding fast. The primary forces are farming, tourism, and the general increase in the wealth and mobility of the inhabitants. These forces can be analysed, and so can the land forms, landscape ecology, and culture of the island on which they are acting and on which there is little previous research, although unique features occur.
However, where no value is placed on natural heritage and environment, landscape ecology analysis cannot influence management or promote conservation, but merely chart the results of development.
