Retaining the cultural heritage of rivers? 2001. In: Mander, Ü, Rintsmann, A. & Palang, H. (Eds). Development of European Landscapes, Vol. 1, 2069, Tartu.
Rivers are under threat.
They are vanishing from all European lowlands and some highlands.
If river existence is lost, then most of the culture which has developed around them will be lost also, unless previously destroyed for other reasons.
River heritage is a depressing subject. Planners, developers and farmers do not see landscapes in terms of streams. That is bad enough - but ecologists and conservationists think the same. Many people put much enthusiasm into dragonflies or waterfowl or riverside wet grassland.
Who does so for the river and its varied and fascinating relationships with people? Hardly anyone.
