Games for Brownies from Cambs East. Cambs East Girl Guides Association. 30 pp., 1983.

PREFACE

Many urban Guiders read the excellent adjurations to 'put the OUT into Scouting' with some despair. Their Brownies, aged 7-11, will be spending most weekly meetings in their meeting hall, well surrounded by roads, concrete playground, with luck houses, shops and gardens they can see but not enter. The Brownies cannot, practically speaking, get to a garden, the country or even a good park (where play is allowed) most meetings. Many games in the books advise hiding behind trees, picking leaves of 12 shades of green and other impossibilities.

This booklet is for these packs. Probably no pack has the facilities to do all the games here described, but it is hoped all packs can do some.

Before going out, rules of behaviour must be established, and if the pack is new to these and of doubtful trustworthiness, a leader should accompany each Six (being close to each Brownie) to enforce them. The stringency of the rules depends on area, on type of road, on other road users, on day versus night, and of course on road versus playground.

In a playground, the Brownies must know they may not leave without special permission, and that they may do no damage (and whatever type of damage is possible should be specified). A genuine 'Oh, I did not think that would do any harm' does not cure a stepped-on plant tub, or whatever. Warnings may be necessary against running on surfaces where Brownies are liable to trip.

On the road the pack should move in Sixes, not all together. The Six should stay on the pavement, if any, and if none, keep single file (normally at the side facing oncoming traffic). Decide in advance whether the Sixer can supervise crossing the road (tiny roads) or whether only leaders may do so; and make this quite clear. N.B. Sixers will be far more careful about seeing one of their Brownies across the road than they would be for themselves when on their own. A road with substantial traffic should be crossed ONLY with a leader. Major roads should not be crossed at all during games. The Six should be told to be in easy reach of each other (talking distance, rather than shouting distance), and usually all Brownies should be within sight of a Leader. No Brownie should run. The major reason is that it is then too easy to run into the middle of the road. The minor, and the one given to the Pack, is that six Brownies running in a block can knock over a pram or shopping trolley or so on. I ground any Six for two minutes if a Brownie runs – it quickly instils 'walk, don't run'. The Brownies should be instructed not to look in house windows, not to use parked cars to put papers on for writing or touch their surfaces, not to gather in knots when passers-by wish to pass – and for any other way in which the Pack could cause offence as nuisance to local residents or road users.

GAMES

1. Textures

Paper and pencil for each Six, send out to find as many different textures they can in (?)5 minutes. Specify whether they must have felt them (better) or merely see them: e.g. glass, concrete, tarmac, brick (several), stone (several), wood, tree bark, soil, crumbling brick or stone in wall. And what is on themselves: skin, hair, cotton, plastic, etc.

2. Wool Game

(Usually recommended for gardens). Collect about 10 shades of wool, string, embroidery thread whose colours can be found in the area. THIS NEEDS CHECKING. DON'T JUST GUESS. For each Six, stick a piece of each of the ten on a piece of card (Sellotaped). Paper and pencils. Sixes list where they can match each colour.

3. How long is the grass?

(or dandelion, or any other plant you have growing in cracks). Each Six is given a ruler (can make from cardboard very easily), a piece of paper headed 'How tall is the longest leaf in each grass clump?' subdivided below, 'Height' and 'Why?'. They go round measuring, and relate height to soil depth, amount of disturbance (trampling), age of plant (size), having been picked, etc.

4. Pavements and road surfaces

Paper and Pencil. What differences can each Six find? In camber (tilt), type and colour of tarmac, height of curb; shape of curb; disabled access on curb; gutters; drains from gutters; paving stones–size, colour; concrete or gravel in place of paving stones; etc. Where do they change? At road ends? Elsewhere? Why?

5. Clouds

Brown Owl brings a book on clouds–which she has looked at first! At least two papers and pencils for each Six. Draw the clouds they see. Look them up in the book and see what they are called and what weather they indicate.

6. Sounds

Paper and pencil for each Six. Each Six told to stand in a different place, as far apart as possible and record all sounds heard in a given time. Compare. What is the reason for any differences?
